Statement on systemic racial injustice
The Canadian Academy of Architecture for Justice is in agreement with the spirit of the recently issued Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s position on Taking Action Against Systemic Racism and the American Institute of Architects’ statement on racial injustice. One of the consequences of systemic racism is the over-representation of Black, Indigenous, and people of colour in the Canadian justice system. The LGBT2Q+ community and other minorities also experience discrimination.
We recognize that architects have an opportunity to be agents of change in the transformation of the justice system. Since our inception we have continuously endeavoured to educate our members, disseminate new ideas and best practices in the planning and design of justice facilities, and encourage speculations on the future design of justice facilities through student competitions. To make our position more explicit we are modifying our goals to include the following:
Support and advocate for a justice system that is accessible and equitable for all members of society.
